“King” of the Magnets

In 1980, the Japanese created a radically new, third generation super-magnet with the discovery of NdFeB (Neodymium-Iron-Boron, approximately 35% Nd) alloys.  It is strongly magnetic even in small amounts as it has a high capacity to retain its magnetic strength.  Indeed, it takes 100 years to lose 1% of its magnetic state.  Due to the complicated technology involved in production, the value of these magnets is very high.

It is currently the most advanced type of magnet and it belongs to the group of rare-earth magnets which also include the samarium-cobalt magnets.

PRODUCTION

First, the desired precursor alloy composite is produced and then it is pulverized into a fine powder.  It is then molded either in the presence of a magnetic field for anisotropic magnets, or in an isotropic press for isotropic magnets.  In most cases, larger pieces are first molded and then later cut into smaller pieces with diamond blades.

The molded pieces are sintered at high temperatures, ground, and cut to size.  In order to prevent galvanic corrosion, a coating (nickel, zinc) is required.

RHODIUM

A hard, silvery white metal.  It belongs to the transition metals and platinum family.  It is a non-allergenic metal.

Rhodium is used as a surface coating for precious metals, especially silver.

Recently, it has also been used as a surface coating for some valuable jewelry.

Rhodium, iridium, and gold belong to the group of so-called monoatomic elements.  These elements make up 5% of the dry weight of the nervous system.  The gold and rhodium that enter our bodies have a positive impact on brain functioning, and the rhodium – like gold – is non-allergenic, does not lose its shine, and is resistant to acids.  The beauty, value, and positive effects of metals increase when plated with rhodium.

Rhodium is also present in platinum, often constituting 4.6% of the alloy.  The production of rhodium is complicated because a lengthy process is required to separate rhodium residues from the platinum.  The process involves treating the rhodium residues with ammonium chloride, and afterwards, heating it to yield finely separated rhodium.  Pure rhodium has a very high melting point.
